PINEVILLE, N.C. — Final preparations are underway for the Richard Sheltra Memorial 10K, 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run and Walk being held in Pineville on April 29.
The event coincides with the one-year anniversary of firefighter Richard Sheltra’s death. He died on April 30, 2016, while fighting a three-alarm fire in Pineville.
Channel 9 was invited behind the scenes Wednesday as organizers finalized plans at Pineville’s fire station.

Walter Broadhurst worked closely with Sheltra and believes the run is a fitting tribute to his friend.
“He was a big fitness guy. He worked out every day. So it makes sense to have a run to push everybody to come and run in his name,” Broadhurst said.
Broadhurst said there will be participants attending the memorial run from across North Carolina to honor Sheltra and other firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
“We're encouraging people from all over the state to come in and live his name, but not just do it for Richard, but do for all the firefighters that lose their life and support all those families,” Broadhurst said.
