Fire crews monitor hot spots, clear debris after mill fire

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Fire crews in Gastonia spent Sunday monitoring hot spots and clearing away debris after a massive mill fire.

Eyewitness News has learned that Wix Filters is the largest company that occupied the warehouse. They used it as a storage facility. There were three workers inside the building when the fire broke out and they all got out safely.

Ken Phillips works for Wix. He was called to the scene to move equipment shortly after the fire broke out.

He was heartbroken to see the building go up in flames.

"It's hard on you, but you just buckle down and rebound," Phillips said.

Nearly 60 firefighters worked well into the night to get the blaze under control. Firefighters continued to monitor the building for any hot spots while cleanup crews were called in, using a bulldozer to pile up all the debris.

Fire officials said investigators will officially begin sifting through the rubble Monday to try and determine the cause of the fire.
