Fire in Blowing Rock possibly set intentionally

More than 100 firefighters are working through the holiday to keep homeowners safe from raging wildfires in Blowing Rock.

Officials still are unsure of the cause.

Earlier this week firefighters told Channel 9 they believe the fire was intentionally set because there were two points of origin.

But the Watauga County Sheriff says he's not investigating arson.

"There is no criminal investigation ongoing," Sheriff Len Hagaman said. "Unless there is new information that someone comes forth with or there's a question we'll just take it one step at a time."

Firefighters conducted back-burning operations all week to protect homes.

Some homeowners are still nervous fire may jump containment lines.

"We have lots of friends who have said come and see us so we do have that option there," homeowner Janet Cox said.

Dramatic video captured by Chopper 9 showed just how close the fire was to homes. Firefighters said it was a back burn in order to prevent the wildfire from spreading.

"We have structure protection units protecting the homes and they will be there overnight," Nathan Hunerwadel, public information officer, said. "They are clearing out brush, clearing out debris that may catch fire and in some cases they may be doing back burning."

Watauga County officials have declared a state of emergency.

The Red Cross is running a shelter at the Faith Alliance Bible Church. So far 55 homes have been evacuated.

Emergency management officials say no further food donations are needed.

In lieu of food, people are asked to donate money to the Red Cross or drop off or send handmade cards to  Blowing Rock Fire Division 1 at 8001 Valley Blvd, Blowing Rock NC 28605.

"If they say get out, get out save your life, you're not going to do anything at the home," Lee Whittman of the Red Cross said.

Whittman has assisted in natural disasters across the country now he's helping out his neighbors as the mountain they live near burns.

"Get out of the area, save your life and don't worry about it, everything else can be replaced," Whittman said.
