Officials: Smoke detectors allowed family to escape flames

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte firefighters responded to a house fire on Sunman Road in northwest Charlotte early Saturday morning.

Firefighters said smoke detectors woke the family up, allowing them to safely get out of the house.

According to neighbor Debbie Glenn, people have been volunteering to help care for the family’s dogs in case the family needs to stay at a hotel for an extended amount of time.

“We’re all going to rally together and do what we can for them,” said Glenn.

The Charlotte Fire Department said more than 20 firefighters were able to control the fire in about 18 minutes. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
