UNION COUNTY - Around 11 a.m. Sunday, the Wingate, Beaver Lane and Monroe City fire departments responded to an apartment fire in rural Union County. It happened on Camden Road at Old Highway 74.
According to the Wingate Fire Department, a two-story brick apartment complex had heavy smoke and flames showing from a second floor window when crews arrived on the scene.
Due to the rural location, additional stations were dispatched to initiate a “Tanker Task Force” response, where multiple drop tanks capable of holding up to 3,500 gallons of water are set up. This water is pumped into fire engines to battle the blaze.
The fire took an hour and a half to control.
The Red Cross was on the scene to help crews with hydration and food.
No injuries were reported.
