NEWTON, N.C. — Firefighters in Newton were able to prevent flames from spreading to a church sanctuary after a fire broke out Friday morning.
Fire crews dispatched to the First Baptist Church on Northwest Boulevard saw thick smoke pouring out of the office area of the church.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly, keeping it from spreading beyond the office.
The sanctuary was not damaged.
Officials told Channel 9 they believe the fire started near a wall AC/heating unit but are still investigating.
