Firefighters rescue wheelchair-bound man from Rock Hill fire

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Firefighters are being hailed as heroes after they saved a wheelchair-bound man from a fire late Wednesday night in Rock Hill.

Reporter Greg Suskin learned officials believe the fire is suspicious.

In video sent to Channel 9 by a viewer, flames can be seen shooting from the roof of the house on North Confederate Avenue.

Channel 9 reporter Greg Suskin is speaking with firefighters about the rescue and will have more on this story on Eyewitness News at 5 p.m.

The fire broke out just after 10 p.m. and it took more than two dozen firefighters roughly an hour to get it under control.

The home was divided into five separate apartments and a man in a wheelchair was stuck on the second floor.

When firefighters arrived, they used a ladder to reach the man and bring him to safety.

Officials said he was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but will be OK.

Authorities told Channel 9 that two other people were displaced by the fire and the Red Cross was helping them.

There was no word yet on what started the fire.
