Snow causes church roof collapse

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The weight of the snow and ice was so heavy it caused the roof to collapse at the fellowship hall of University Hills Baptist Church in University City.

Neighbors who live nearby ran to the building after they heard a loud boom coming from the church around 3 p.m.

When they got there, they found the roof had completely caved in.

They dialed 911 and within minutes, the Charlotte Fire Department arrived to search the building to make sure no one was inside and to secure the building.

It could be several days before crews can assess the damage.

The pastor said he's glad he dismissed the church early and he's relieved no one was here when this happened.
