First Charlotte Publix store opens in Ballantyne

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Publix opened its first store in North Carolina Wednesday.

Channel 9 got an inside look at the Publix on Providence Road West Tuesday.

It's the first of eleven locations planned for the Charlotte area over the next few years.

"Fans of Publix have been asking us to come here, particularly to Charlotte, for a long time. It's been long anticipated," said a store spokesperson.

The Florida-based chain has expanded into five southern states over the last decade.

This increases competition for Matthews-based Harris Teeter.

In reaction to Publix entering the market, a spokesperson said, "Harris Teeter remains focused on delivering excellent customer service and outstanding products in clean, up-to-date facilities."
