Former Gardner-Webb athlete dies in Afghanistan

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — A former Gardner-Webb football player lost his life while serving in the military in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Jerry Gass, a U.S. Army Green Beret, died on Sunday. He was 33 years old.

His death was not combat related.

He was stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville and was awarded his second Bronze Star medal and the Meritorious Service medal after his death.

The assistant athletic director at Gardner-Webb called the loss a tragedy.

"He was very well-liked here on campus and among his teammates -- very popular guy. They're all pretty shaken up with the news," Marc Rabb said.
