Former South Point teacher accused of sex with student appears in court

Court documents reveal new details Tuesday in connection with the arrest of a Gaston County teacher accused of having sex with a student.

The documents show that the teen’s mom went to authorities after learning about the relationship with the 45-year-old.

Police sources also told Channel 9’s Dave Faherty they are looking into whether anymore male students may be involved.

Teika Helton didn’t answer any questions after appearing before a judge Tuesday in Gaston County.

Helton is charged with six felony offenses involving a student.

She worked at South Pointe High School in Belmont, where parents and students were stunned to hear news of the arrest.

"I think it's really bad when your kids are trying to go to school to get an education and you have somebody you trust as a teacher," said parent Cameron Block.

“It’s just weird. She’s like 45 years old,” said student Gage Block.

According to a search warrant in the case, the teen victim's mom learned of the relationship after Helton invited the mom to a University of North Carolina at Charlotte football game, where her son now goes to college.

The court documents said Helton admitted to having sex with the teenager, but claimed it happened after he graduated last spring.

Channel 9 went to her home listed on the arrest warrant, but the driveway was blocked and there were two no trespassing signs nearby.

Some parents at the school said the case is a reminder for parents to be vigilant.

In the search warrant, Helton admitted to sending texts to the teenager that were sexual in nature while he was still a student.
