Gastonia officer attacked by suspect

GASTONIA, N.C. — (AP) A Gastonia man has been arrested after police say he ran from officers, then hit one of them and tried to take his gun.

The Gaston Gazette reported that 35-year-old Deontre Lashard Dameron is charged with two counts of larceny, resisting arrest, assault on an officer and assault with a deadly weapon on an officer.

An arrest warrant said Dameron was approached by officers after being suspected of stealing four 18-packs of beer from a convenience store.

The warrants say Dameron ran and when an officer caught him, he punched the officer and tried to take his gun.

It was not clear if Dameron has an attorney.
