Gov. Cooper attends major auto company announcement, comments on Amazon

MORGANTON, N.C. — One of Burke County’s largest employers announced Monday that it’s expanding, with plans to add 150 new jobs.

Continental officials demonstrated their advanced braking system in front of the company’s Morganton plant Monday morning, where they are planning an 82,000-foot expansion. The company makes millions of the systems every year.

Continental employs more than 500 people in Burke County and will be investing $50 million in the area.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper attended the announcement and spoke with Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty about Amazon’s looming decision for the location of its second headquarters.

“We are taking significant steps to make sure that North Carolina makes the first cut, and then we’re going to work on it even more to see which of our communities they are interested in,” Cooper said.

Cooper plans to visit downtown Morganton Monday afternoon to talk with small business owners.
