Medicaid, Medicare to be cut at Salisbury nursing home

SALISBURY, N.C. — The government is cracking down on a Salisbury nursing home after a series of troubling issues.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Medicaid and Medicare services will be cut off to the Brian Center nursing home in Salisbury next month.

"I am quite shocked," Tammy Nelson said. "You only want the best for your parents."

The federal agency said the Brian Center failed to comply with the programs' guidelines.

Channel 9 went through the nursing home's inspection records and discovered 28 deficiencies, which is almost six times higher than the average for facilities in the state.

Records show in March a resident was left on a bedpan for more than an hour.

The documents also said a resident had a sexual encounter with an impaired woman. Staff members later discovered the resident in question was a sex offender.

Channel 9 has investigated Brian Center facilities around North Carolina for years.

In 2014, an employee said she resigned from the company because of the poor conditions it created for its residents.

Emails to Brian Center's parent company weren't returned. An employee of Brian Center hung up on Eyewitness News reporter Joe Bruno twice.

Tammy Nelson said she was planning on moving her dad out of this facility before she heard about the issues.

She's hoping others will follow.

"What a shock to the people who are here," she said.

Out of five stars, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services only gives one star to this facility for overall health care.
