Grand jury to hear case of driver accused of hitting, killing student

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A grand jury will now hear the case of a Rowan County driver accused of hitting and killing a 17-year-old student as he was walking to catch his school bus.
 
Barbara Harrison Smith, 57, did not appear in court Wednesday.
                               
She is charged with a felony for passing a stopped school bus resulting in death.
                               
Police said she hit and killed Makinzy Smith in October after she failed to stop for his school bus which had its stop sign extended.
                               
The grand jury will hear the case April 16.
