HEARTWARMING: 2 local students receive special ride after battling cancer

Two local children who battled cancer and won received special rides on Friday to class that they will never forget.

Natiya James and Dakota Roseborough were each given police escorts to their schools.

Natiya was diagnosed with leukemia in November and was in remission within 28 days of treatment.

Dakota’s father told Channel 9 his son was diagnosed with multiple brain tumors.

Hometown Heroes stepped in to take them both to school. The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office, Mint Hill Police, Monroe Police, Concord Police, Waxhaw Fire Department and Charlotte Fire Department all took part in the escort to class.

Dakota was the first to be taken to class at Harold E Winkler Middle School in Concord, and the next stop was Long Creek Elementary in Huntersville for Natiya.

Natiya’s mother said the community’s support makes all the difference.

“When we first learned of her diagnosis, we were grounded. It just felt like the wind was kicked out of us. But when we knew that the community would come together and when we knew that we had that foundation, it was nothing but God’s movement,” Trasha Fentress-James said.

Hometown Heroes also gave away $29,000 to the children’s families.
