Homeowners concerned about booming growth in South Park

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The South Park area is booming, but that has some homeowners concerned, enough so to hold a meeting Wednesday night to discuss how to make sure the area can handle all the growth.

The area has exploded over the past couple years as the SouthPark Mall has brought in thousands of apartments, restaurants and retail stores.

Members of 20 different HOAs will meeting Wednesday evening to discuss the best ways to handle the growth. They want to make sure the area has character and traffic is managed.

Currently, there are 2,400 apartments either proposed or under construction for the already booming area.

In March, Channel 9 reported that the Sharon United Methodist Church will be torn down to build a hotel, apartments and shops, and in February Eyewitness News reported plans for 450 apartments and 600,000 square feet of retail space at Park and Abbey Place.

The Urban Land Institute released a report on what South Park needs to do to be successful. Among other things, the report called for building new street connections to improve traffic, adding bike lanes and sidewalks and a public and private partnership -- all topics the group plans to discuss Wednesday night.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Sharon Towers Hunter Hall on Sharon Road.

Channel 9 will bring you every development out of that meeting and will have complete coverage on Eyewitness News at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
