Homicides weigh heavy on Charlotte neighborhoods impacted by the violence

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Another violent weekend in Charlotte is weighing heavily on the neighbors who said they’re faced with the problems on a daily basis.

Two deadly shootings, just hours apart from each other, brought the number of homicides in Charlotte this year to 38.

Dorothy Sellers has lived in her home off of Wynbrook Way for 18 years. She said she loves to read the Bible in her favorite chair, but has learned to get out of the way.

“Thank the Lord he’s given me the strength to just go down to the floor, and the bullets they just ‘Pow, pow, pow.’ Sometimes it seems like it's outside,” Sellers said.

It was just outside on Sunday afternoon that Lucas Baldwin, 34, was shot and killed in some apartments just a few doors down from Sellers. Police said Baldwin knew the person who shot him and was killed after a dispute. Officers have not arrested the shooter.

Hours later, William Weddington was shot and killed at a home on Spring Terrace Lane, close to Statesville Road. Police arrested Maurice Grant in the case. Detectives said the homicide was the result of a domestic dispute.

Police typically increase patrols following a homicide in order to restore a sense of safety to residents.

“They are very aware of that and I don’t want to say, ‘Put your kid gloves on,’ but you need to be aware of that,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Lt. Mike Abbondanza said.

Police also have set up counseling for children and adults who have been affected by the violence.
