Horses, dog, puppies killed in northwest Charlotte barn fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police had to close a busy road in northwest Charlotte early Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to get a barn fire under control.

Firefighters from three different departments responded to the fire call on Oakdale Road just before 7 a.m.

The homeowner called 911 when he heard the animals in the barn making a lot of noise and told Channel 9 that by the time he got to the barn and tried to get the animals out, the flames were too intense.

Firefighters were able to rescue many animals, including chickens, dogs and a peacock, but two horses died in the fire as well as the homeowner's labrador and her six puppies.

Officers closed Oakdale Road around 7 a.m., between Simpson Road and Mount Holly-Huntersville Road while crews battled the flames.

The barn was destroyed and crews reopened the road around 7:50 a.m.

Investigators are working to figure out what caused the fire.
