Hot job market making it hard for Charlotte companies to hold on to workers

CHARLOTTE, NC — Experts say job growth is near an all-time high in Charlotte, making it easier than ever to find a job. But, the strong job market is also making it harder for companies to hold on to their employees.

So, companies like Charlotte's Blythe Construction are constantly searching for ways to keep their employees from leaving for one of their competitors.

"We have stay interviews. We've also done surveys where we ask employees what are our strengths and what are our weaknesses," explained Ross Peters.

The head of The Employers Association says jobs and wages are exploding in Charlotte, so dozens of other employers are also trying to hold onto the workers they have.

"You have got to be on the full spectrum of being on you’re A-game to keep people employed with you," said Kelly Colbert with The Employers Association.

A new job report from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics shows the U.S. added 313,000 jobs last month compared to the 200,000 they were expecting. Experts say that makes this the best time to find a job in Charlotte that they've ever seen.

"I think you're going to see larger pay increases, maybe some larger bonuses or spot bonuses that we haven't seen over the last few years," said Colbert.

Colbert says the bottom line is if you're in the market for a job, the market is in your favor.  So, if you aren't happy where you are, and your employer isn't trying to keep you, you have plenty of other options.

That's why more and more companies are now starting to follow the lead of businesses like Blythe Construction where they work to keep their workers.

"We want to be able to keep our employees, so having that reputation and being a place where people want to come and people want to stay," said Peters.
