Hurricane Matthew forces couple to move beach wedding

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte couple is scrambling Thursday night to move their weekend wedding from the Outer Banks.

Anchor Scott Wickersham spoke to them through Skype as they were evacuating from the coast.

The couple was supposed to get married at the Outer Banks this weekend, but they evacuated Thursday, along with many others.

“Last year, this same weekend was Hurricane Joaquin. Got texts saying, ‘Hope this isn’t you guys next year,’” Nelson said.

They aren’t letting that stop them, and they even got some help from a local business.

Chrissie Nelson and A.J. Rotko spent 18 months planning their wedding on the beach in Kitty Hawk, with guests arriving from all over the country.

Hurricane Matthew has forced the couple to alter their plans.

They took some wedding pictures on the beach and canceled the ceremony.

“The cakes is in the back of my sister’s Hyundai driving across I-85 right now,” Nelson said.

The couple will get married at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse Saturday with modified vows, of course, and the owners of the Foundry uptown offered their venue for free.
