6-month long I-77 patching work begins Monday near state line

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Crews began a resurfacing project on part of Interstate 77 in Charlotte.

The $11 million project will repave parts of the interstate from Tyvola Road to the South Carolina border.

Lane and ramp closures will be restricted to the overnight hours. The project is expected to be finished by the end of September.

Drivers are likely to see more construction and some ramp and lane closures. The North Carolina Department of Transportation told Channel 9 that the project also includes improving these seven bridges along the roadway:

  • I-77 north and south at Westinghouse Boulevard
  • I-77 north and south over Sugar Creek
  • I-77 north and south at Arrowood Road
  • Ramp bridge from I-77 north to the I-485 inner loop

Crews will start work at the state line and officials said lane and ramp closures will be restricted to overnight hours.

Drivers told Channel 9 that while they're happy to hear of improvements, more construction usually causes some problems.

“Remember the last time they did that they had several wrecks on the highway when they went from like three to five lanes,” said Carl Burris. “It's gonna be dangerous.”

The $11 million project is expected to be finished by the end of September.
