ICE will not target students at schools, CMS says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent Ann Clark said that Immigration officials have assured her that they will not pick up students at schools or at school bus stops.

Clark spoke with immigration officials Monday after many in the community were on edge since video surfaces showing officers picking up two men near Berryhill Elementary school last week.

Clark released a statement Monday saying U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have promised not to target students at schools or bus stops.

But the head of the Latin American Coalition said the impact of the ICE arrests has many on edge.

"The impact that that's having in our community at every level.
From businesses, to the school district--the fabric of our community is affected by this," Jose Hernandez-Paris said.

ICE said in a statement Monday that they are targeting primarily criminals and those who have already been deported at least once, and are not conducting widespread raids or sweeps.
