Independence Blvd. lane project to resume after nearly 3 months

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Road crews will be back at work on Independence Boulevard Monday morning, completing major road work that has sat idle for months.

Channel 9 has stayed on top of this story for months after the former contractor walked off the job.

The new contractor, Lane Construction, will begin the lane-widening project that has been on hold since late January when Devere Construction walked off the job over a pay dispute with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The company had put in three years of work on the project.

In a 9 investigation, Eyewitness News learned Devere was barred from bidding on state contracts after delaying work on a Wake County bypass in 2014.

Businesses along the impacted stretch of Independence Blvd. told Channel 9 that ongoing construction has really hurt business and they were afraid that any further delay would be more detrimental.

Lane Construction has been meeting with DOT officials and the contractor will begin paving Monday.

The state hopes the project will be able to stay on track to be completed in October of 2016, but they have not confirmed if the new company will be able to stick to that timeline.
