Investigators search mother's home after 3-month-old injured

GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — Police executed a search warrant at a mother's home in Granite Falls after a 3-month-old girl was hospitalized. Court documents described what happened to the child as a possible case of shaken baby syndrome.

Police in Granite Falls said they've had as many as six officers working the case.

According to the search warrant, police don't believe all of the baby's injuries happened on the same day.

Neighbors said it was hard to believe anyone would want to hurt the child. Dwayne Burgin met the family shortly after they moved in last month with the newborn.

"They seem so loving and caring. I just can't believe it," Burgin said.

According to court documents, investigators said they are looking into a possible case of shaken baby syndrome.

Doctors at Levine's Children Hospital, where the child is being treated, said the injuries which include six broken ribs, a broken leg and a head injury are "consistent with child abuse."

"Just awful. I don't know how anybody could do that. It would take a monster to do that. It just doesn't fit their profile from what I was around," Burgin said.

For the first time, Channel 9 learned doctors believe some of the ribs were broken 10 days before the hospital visit while others were more recent.

Police said at this point, they are trying to determine if the injuries are accidental or intentional and have not charged anyone in the case.

The 19-year old mother, her live-in boyfriend and the child's grandmother lived at the home. Neighbors like Kenneth Haas want answers.

"I just hope they get to the bottom of it and help the little baby. That's the main thing that the baby is okay, and they find out who done it so they can answer for it," Haas said.

According to the search warrant, police did not seize anything from the home.

Investigators said they have more interviews to do in the case and may have some answers by the end of the week.
