Judge extends restraining order against former officer charged with statutory rape

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A judge extended a restraining order Wednesday afternoon against a former Lowell Police Officer accused of statutory rape.

The order of protection said Paul Blair should not have any contact with the 14-year-old girl.

Attorneys for the girl requested the order after Blair reached out to the teenager from the Gaston County Jail, they said.

The order of protection does not describe how Blair tried to communicate.

In court Wednesday, the teenager took the stand and struggled talking about the circumstances.

The girl’s mother also took the stand.

Her daughter was interested in becoming a police officer, and Blair offered to mentor her, the mother testified.

Blair admitted to getting the girl pregnant when she was 13 years-old, the mother said.

“You are an absolute liar!” Blair shouted after the mother’s testimony.

Following that outburst, the judge decided to award the family the order of protection.

Jail staff can prevent Blair from calling or sending messages to the girl or her family.

Blair, who represented himself in the hearing, did not get a chance to ask questions.
