Updated:COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)r County officer has been named the South Carolina Deputy of the Year for using data to figure out the source of crime in part of his county.
The South Carolina Sheriffs' Association announced the award Thursday. It will be given to Lt. Michael Miller at the association's meeting in July.
Sheriff Barry Faile nominated Miller, saying he used data to determine two nightclubs were the source of a number of crimes in his patrol district.
Deputies worked with the State Law Enforcement Division and community leaders to revoke the alcohol licenses for the club. Faile says crime dropped substantially in the area after that.
Faile praised his deputy for his innovative approach to police work.
