Lawmaker to file bill to keep phone out of drivers' hands

North Carolina Senator Jeff Tarte will file legislation on Thursday to get cellphones 'out of your hands' behind the wheel.

Tarte plans to introduce a bill that will make drivers go hands-free.

The bill suggests that you can still use a blue tooth, or ear piece, but would no longer be able to hold a phone while driving.

Tarte (R- Mecklenburg) said he has ridden along with Highway Patrol officers who specifically look for people talking, texting on reading on their phones.

"It's amazing,” Tarte said. “It's like watching a drunk driver because they weave on the road and their speed fluctuates if they're not on cruise control.

“It's a pretty fascinating experience.”

Tarte said he initially drafted this bill two years ago, but it didn't have much support.

After it is filed on Thursday, Tarte said the legislation could be up for a Senate vote by the end of April.
