Light pole almost lands on car in Matthews

MATTHEWS — A light pole almost landed on the car with two people instead as they headed to church Sunday morning.

A man and his grandmother were on Sam Newell Road near Pineville-Matthews Road when a light pole came crashing down, landing in the roadway.

Channel 9 spoke with man who saw the light as it was coming down. He says the pair is lucky the car did not get hit.

"All I heard was a big boom, and I looked back and the pole was coming straight towards my car. I told my grandmother to pull up and if she didn't pull up it would have come across my car," said witness Joshua Polston.

No injuries were reported. Crews cleaned the damage up Sunday afternoon.
