LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. - A Lincoln County man has been charged with the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl he met through Facebook.
Deputies say 19-year-old Robert Weaver picked the girl up, took her to his home, raped her, then dropped her off near
her Lincoln County home.
A relative called police.
Deputies said they are concerned with cases like this. Victims can disappear and then investigators have a violent crime on their hands, deputies said.
“We don’t want it to be a homicide investigation, something even worse than statutory rape. We want to get it before it gets worse,” said Lincoln County Sheriff Tim Johnson.
Deputies told Channel 9 Weaver has 1,200 Facebook friends, many of them very young girls. Deputies said Weaver has no previous sex charges.
They said this is a good reminder for parents to know who their children’s friends are on social networking sites.
