HICKORY, NC — Less than a year after graduating from the Hickory Career and Arts Magnet School, Johnny White returned Tuesday to a red-carpet treatment where even the mayor came out.

“It’s certainly a good thing for our citizenry. We are proud of Johnny and what he’s accomplished,” said Mayor Hank Guess.
Everyone is excited because White is competing on the new season of American Idol, which returns to television right here on WSOC-TV this Sunday at 8 a.m.
“Johnny has an amazing voice, and we all miss Johnny - hearing his voice come down the hallway,” said student Peyton Reinhardt.
At the age of 7, White says he moved from shelter to shelter in local foster care. But, it was his voice and performing in front of others that kept him focused on his goals.
"I have dreamed of doing this ever since I was a kid. To actually, finally, to be able to do this is such a blessing," he said.

The competition will be stiff, but White said he believes he’s up for the challenge and knows he’s got his hometown behind him.
"Just tune in and watch the journey," he said.
Tuesday wasn't the first time the 19-year old performed at his school. Last year at his own graduation ceremony, White sang the national anthem.
