CMPD to determine if apartments broken into after 3-alarm fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are trying to determine if apartments were broken into after a massive three-alarm fire at the Woodscape Apartments in east Charlotte.

Residents and the building owner told Channel 9 at least three apartments that were not damaged in the fire were broken into over the weekend and ransacked.

But police are determining if there might have been some miscommunication with residents and crews who have been cleaning up the fire.

Jesus Reyes Lopez, 20, is accused of setting the fire at the apartment complex last week.

Sources said that Lopez was targeting an ex-girlfriend who lived at the Woodscape Apartments.

The three-alarm fire left 130 people without a home.

When Channel 9 asked Lopez about the children who were left without a home because of his alleged actions, he smiled while being put into a patrol car.

The Red Cross shelter at New Hope Baptist Church remains open for the dozens of families who still don’t have a home. Community partners have come together to help find housing for families.

Clothing donations have also filled two gymnasiums, so those type of donations are not being accepted right now.
