Man, 40, drowns after hitting rocks in cliff jump

A 40-year-old man drowned on Lake Rhodhiss after jumping from a rock cliff.

Caldwell County Sheriff’s deputies said Gregory Paul Bordeleau of Valdese hit his head on rocks as he fell 25 feet from the cliff.


The person who called 911 said Bordeleau and some friends were jumping into the lake Sunday at 3:44 a.m.

The caller told investigators that he slipped and fell and hit head on the way down.


Bordeleau went under the water and never resurfaced.

Friends jumped in but were unable to locate him.

Emergency responders pulled his body from the water around 8 a.m.

Deputies said the investigation is ongoing, but it appears to be an accident.
