Man accused of firing deputy's stolen gun with child in car

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities arrested a man they said used an Avery County deputy’s stolen gun to fire shots into the air while passing a pair of motorcycles Wednesday night in Alexander County.

Around 8 p.m., dispatchers received a 911 call about shots being fired from a black Lexus on Millersville Road, near Highway 16 South.

According to investigators, the Lexus passed two motorcycles and a man inside pulled a gun and fired shots into the air.

A short time later, officers stopped a black Lexus matching the description at the intersection of Wayside Church Road and Rink Dam Road.

Michael Stacy II, of Taylorsville, was driving and had a female passenger as well as a young child passenger, police said.

Officers searched the car and found a Glock 22 handgun. The serial number on the gun was checked and came back as reported stolen out of Burke County, belonging to an Avery County deputy.

Authorities said the gun was stolen out of the deputy's car in his driveway, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition, handcuffs and police-issued belts.

Stacy was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, felony possession of stolen property and going armed to the terror of the public. He is out of jail after posting a $20,000 secured bond.

The Department of Social Services was notified of the stop due to the child being in the car.

It's not the first time Stacy has been in trouble with the law. In 2012, Stacy and his brother were accused of torturing a man with a blow torch after beating and tying him up in Alexander County. He was convicted of second-degree kidnapping and served more than two years in prison.
