Man accused of shooting Charlotte mother gets out of jail in 4 days

A man accused of shooting a Charlotte mother as she was protecting her 6-month-old baby was able to bond out of jail after four days.

Curtis Garyray Kerr, 36, faces several charges, including attempted murder.

Police said Kerr forced his way into an apartment on Wexford Meadows Lane and shot a mother between 11 to 13 times while she was protecting her baby.

The 6-month-old was not hurt, police said.

The woman who was shot has been in and out of surgery for the past 18 days. She lost a kidney and her spleen, suffered a collapsed lung and needed repair on her shoulder and femur.

The woman’s family members said they are upset and scared that Kerr is out of jail. The magistrate set his bond at slightly more than $220,000.

"I'd say that most people charged with these kinds of offenses at this kind of bond usually can't make it,” attorney Rick Winiker said.

Winiker said it is important to remember that accused suspects are innocent until proven guilty and bonds are primarily set to ensure the accused shows up for court.

"A judge has to set what's called a reasonable bond in a case. The standard they use is whether a person is a danger to others or is reasonably likely to appear in court,” Winiker said.

Officer Gil Allred, of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, comforted the victim's baby moments after the shooting.

Allred is a 26-year veteran of the department who recently retired, told Channel 9 it was a miracle the baby wasn't injured.

Authorities said that Kerr and the woman did not know each other, and they believe Kerr was looking for another person when he invaded her home.
