Man admits to making bomb threats in Catawba County

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A man accused of making hundreds of bomb threats across the Foothills pleaded guilty again to the crime, this time in Catawba County.

Cody Startt pleaded guilty in February to making over 250 bomb threats in Burke County. A judge sentenced Startt to more than 11 years in prison for those cases.

He’s also accused of making bogus threats in Caldwell County but has not entered a guilty plea in those cases.

Startt confessed to making the threats from a home in West Virginia and then listening to the police response by using an app on his computer.

Morganton District Attorney David Learner said in February that people in Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties dealt with Startt’s “reign of terror” for more than two months. He also said the bomb threats cost businesses $750,000.

Startt’s attorney told the judge during Februarys' guilty plea that Startt had a mental illness and instead of taking his medication, he was using meth. Starrt apologized for his actions.
