Man arrested after fatal shooting in Uptown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was killed in Uptown late Saturday night after he was shot near the 400 block of East Trade Street.

Police said Richard Marquis Bonds, 30, was in a parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound just before 11 p.m. Saturday. Medic officials pronounced him dead at the scene.

Detectives arrested David Michael Simpson, 16, and charged him with murder.

Investigators said Bonds was involved in a fist fight with someone in the parking lot where he was shot. According to police, Simpson shot Bonds during the fight. The incident was filmed by surveillance cameras.

Witnesses told CMPD Bonds drove away in a car. Police found the car at the 3100 block of Rozzelles Ferry Road when they responded to an accident call. Simpson was still in the car when officers arrived.

Police said the surveillance video and information given by multiple witnesses was instrumental in the arrest.
