Mother, daughter fearful after attempted abduction

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Burke County mother and her 12-year-old daughter are still terrified after deputies said someone tried to kidnap the girl outside her home.

The mother and daughter, who did not want to show their faces, talked about what happened near their mailbox Thursday evening.

They clung to each other Friday after a sleepless night.

Investigators said the 12 year old went to get the mail when a white four door Chevrolet pulled up.

The man inside asked the girl to get in and deputies said he had a gun under his right leg.

"Some random car pulled up and he said, 'Do you want a ride?' and he kept showing me a gun," the daughter said. "I said, 'No,' and he kept asking so I went home screaming."

The sheriff and other deputies stepped up patrols looking for the white sedan.

Deputies describe the driver as a 40-year old African-American man with a bird-like tattoo on his right shoulder.

The girl's mother was hesitant to talk to Eyewitness News but did because she is worried it could happen again.

"I do worry about other kids," she said. "If he done it to her, what makes you think he won't do it to someone else?"
