CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man has been charged in connection with a sexual assault in 1993.
A woman was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by several unknown men on April 23, 1993, on Caldwell Street, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Detectives collected evidence but were unable to get suspect information at the time because of technology limitations.
The CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit reopened the case, re-examined evidence and submitted DNA to the crime lab.
Police identified Antonio Gaines, 51, as a suspect based on DNA evidence.
Gaines, who was already in custody in Scotland County for a conviction in 2001, is charged with two counts of first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense and attempted robbery in connection with the Charlotte case.
