Man in critical condition following Hickory hit-and-run

HICKORY, N.C. — Police are searching for the driver who struck a pedestrian in Hickory Monday night and drove off.

Investigators told Channel 9 that 28-year-old Joshua Holden was hit by a vehicle around 8 p.m. in the 200 block of 12th Avenue NE, between Viewpoint Baptist Church and the Cubbard Express convenience store.

Police found Holden on the ground with severe injuries and he was rushed to Frye Regional Medical Center before being taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem where he was listed in critical condition.

Hannah Rowe and Jody Helms were heading home when they spotted Holden severely injured on the side of the road.

They immediately got out and tried to help.

"His shoes were scattered about 10 feet away from him,” Rowe said. “It looked like someone had ran up onto the curb. There was a tire mark next to him."

"We were the only ones who looked like we cared,” Helms said. “Not one person stopped, not one person who wondered what was going on, nothing. Not one person."

Police said they have few leads in the case including a description of the vehicle or anyone who actually saw the accident.

Rowe and Helms hope he recovers and the driver comes forward.

"Just turn yourself in,” Rowe said. “Just turn yourself in."

Officers have not released any suspect vehicle details and are asking anyone with information to call 828-261-2626.
