Man kidnapped, stabbed more than a dozen times in Maiden, police say

MAIDEN, N.C. — A man was found Monday morning in Maiden with more than a dozen stab wounds, police said.

A police officer on routine patrol spotted 62-year-old William Dickey outside his SUV, suffering from stab wounds and his throat slashed.

"When I got out of the vehicle, he said please don't hurt me,” said Maiden police Officer Brandon Winstead. “I'm assuming he thought I was the suspects.”

Dickey lives in Greensboro but works in Bessemer City and was driving along Interstate 40 on Monday when he pulled off at an exit in Maiden to rest, according to investigators. They said he woke up to two men next to his SUV with a gun.

Police said Dickey was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to drive through Catawba County while the second suspect followed in an older model black pickup truck, before ending up at a cul-de-sac in Maiden.

Investigators said his laptops, a small amount of cash and other items were missing.

At the rest area along Interstate 40, Channel 9 spoke with truck driver Diane Mellace who trains other drivers on ways to stay safe on the road.

"So what would be my advice, always park where there are people around,” Mellace said. “Never park where there nobody around."

Dickey was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police are canvassing area businesses in hopes of finding surveillance video of the kidnapping, but so far no arrests have been made.

Winstead went to the hospital Monday night to check on Dickey and his family.

"The family was very gracious that I was able to find him,” Winstead said. “It was just by the grace of God that I had come down this street yesterday and find him."
