Husband and wife dead in murder-suicide

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office said a man shot his wife and later shot himself after leading deputies on a short chase.

Several neighbors confirmed the victims were Dawn and Dennis Moss. Friends said Dennis drove up alongside Dawn as she walked on Main Street and fired a shot at her.

"She was begging him not to shoot her because she had kids (with him)," said neighbor, Beth Martin. "It's sad all the way around ... she will be missed."

Deputies were already on scene when, according to them, Dennis Moss fired the shot and drove off. Deputies shot at Dennis Moss but it's unclear whether he was actually hit with any of the shots. Since deputies fired shot, the State Bureau of Investigation is also involved in the investigation.

Neighbors said they saw Dennis Moss lead deputies on a short chase before driving back to Main Street, where his wife was on the ground dying.

"He just looked down at her and then he shot himself," said Martin.

Dennis Moss died at the scene. Dawn Moss was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Friends set up a memorial with flowers and a candle. We saw friends and family kneeling by it Sunday with tears in their eyes. The couple leaves behind two children.
