Mapping out the Charlotte area's wealthiest ZIP codes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While the methodology for this ranking has changed, the end result is the same — Charlotte’s wealthiest enclave is the 28207 ZIP code, which includes parts of the posh Myers Park and Eastover neighborhoods.

This year, CBJ parent company American City Business Journals ranked a nationwide total 18,316 ZIP codes with populations of 2,000 or more from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2016 American Community Survey. An ACBJ Wealth Index was developed, using eight current ACS indicators. Positive scores were awarded for performances that were better than the national average within each category, and negative scores were given for performances that were worse. The wealth index for a given ZIP code is the sum of its eight category scores.

Based on that formula, the slideshow above reveals the top 25 wealthiest ZIPs in the Charlotte area, along with key stats on household incomes and home values.

Similar to last year’s ranking, the 28207 ZIP encompassing Myers Park/Eastover scored highest. Notably, the median home value in 28207 is more than double that of the ZIP with the next-highest wealth index, 28036 in Davidson. The stately in-town neighborhood also has a significantly higher percentage of households earning $200,000 or more per year than its counterpart in the Lake Norman area.
