Former Matthews commissioner resigns 3 months after Channel 9 investigation

MATTHEWS, N.C. — The town of Matthews has appointed a new commissioner to its board.

The move comes after former Commissioner Barbara Dement resigned following a Channel 9 investigation.

The town appointed Ken McCool to take over Dement's seat.

McCool was sworn in Monday night and said he's happy to serve the town of Matthews.

His term will run through December 2021.

Dement was elected to her second term in November.

Ahead of that election, a Channel 9 investigation found that Dement hadn’t filed campaign finance reports for two years. She was fined for violating campaign finance law and resigned three months later.

She said her resignation was due to professional responsibilities.
