MATTHEWS, N.C. — A man assaulted a Matthews police officer Wednesday afternoon at the Best Buy on Matthews Township Parkway, authorities said.
Darius Najee Battey, 25, of Saint Albans, New York, made a fraudulent purchase of a computer that cost $2,800, police said.
The officer made contact with Battey inside the store, then ran, according to police.

When the officer caught up to Battey to arrest him, Battey resisted and assaulted the officer, authorities said.
The officer managed to arrest Battey after the brief altercation.
Battey was charged with attempting to obtain property by false pretense, resist, obstruct or delay a public officer and assault with physical injury on an officer.

The officer was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.
