Meck Co. DA asks SBI to investigate deadly officer-involved shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County district attorney asked the State Bureau of Investigation Thursday to investigate the death of Keith Scott, at the request of Scott’s family. The office has also advised North Carolina’s governor about the request to utilize the SBI.

Under state law, the DA must ask for an SBI investigation when he receives a request from the family of a person who was killed by a law enforcement officer in the line of duty.

Mecklenburg County prosecutors will review the SBI’s findings when the investigation is completed.

The DA’s office designed the protocol in these kind of cases in order to ensure that a professional, thorough, impartial and transparent review is conducted in every officer-involved shooting in Mecklenburg County.

The DA’s office has also been in contact with the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice. The office is providing them with information to assist with their review of the matter.

The DA’s office encourages the Charlotte community to take part in peaceful and constructive conversations. It also wants the public to understand that a thorough investigation requires time, and that prosecutor’s ethical obligations restrict which information can be shared during an investigation.
