Driver charged after bicyclist struck, killed in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have charged a driver in a deadly bike accident that happened late Sunday morning in east Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Nathaniel Lancaster was turning left in his 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck onto Hawthorne Lane just before noon, and drove right in front of a Lexus.

Lancaster hit the car, causing it to spin out of control and hit a 73-year-old bicyclist.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police have not released the victim's name but those who live in the area said they knew him.

The driver of the Lexus and a passenger were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries.

Lancaster was not injured. He's charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield at an intersection.
