CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A small gathering was held at Marshall Park in uptown Charlotte in honor of the late Rev. Billy Graham.
Candles were lit and accompanied by singing.
People honored the life of “America's Pastor” at a vigil organized by the Million Youth March of Charlotte and Salisbury.
Members of the group said teams of people from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association were a big part of keeping the calm during Charlotte's riots in 2016.
Organizers felt Sunday’s vigil was a small way of thanking him.
"In 2016, when Keith Lamont Scott was killed, we had a prayer vigil on these same grounds and thousands were here, and his crusade was here by surprise, so this is our way of giving back to the graham family,” said Mario Black, founder of the Million Youth March of Charlotte and Salisbury.
Graham’s body was taken to the Billy Graham Library Saturday in a 130-mile procession from Asheville to Charlotte.
Thousands of people lined the streets of the processional route to witness a piece of history while showing respect to “America's Preacher.”
