Police release report detailing night Mooresville officer was shot, killed

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The Mooresville Police Department issued a report Sunday on the State Bureau of Investigation’s inquiry into Officer Jordan Sheldon’s shooting death during a traffic stop on May 4.

Of note, the report details a conversation investigators had with the gunman’s former girlfriend, indicating that Michael Aldana was potentially suicidal and “had made recent comments of killing himself, and in the process, killing a police officer.”

The report details more about the traffic stop, which indicates Sheldon pulled Aldana over on suspicion of a suspended driver’s license. According to the report, Sheldon ran the license and then returned to the car to discuss the suspended license.

It was during that conversation that Aldana shot Sheldon with a semi-automatic handgun, killing him.

Aldana then drove to his apartment off Plaza Drive, where he died by suicide, according to the report.

Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams commended the community for the support of the Police Department throughout the entire situation.

“We are so blessed to live in a community that cares about its police department,” Williams wrote.
