Moped rider hit, killed by SUV in Cleveland Co. on Christmas Eve

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — State troopers were investigating after they said a man was struck and killed while driving his moped in Cleveland County on Christmas Eve.

According to Channel 9's partners at the Shelby Star, 61-year-old Hubo Dexter Oxendine, of Shelby, was hit from behind by a Ford Explorer while riding eastbound on U.S. 74., near Beaver Dam Church Road, arounf 6 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We believe the Ford Explorer was doing the speed limit. The mo-ped was going as fast as it could, which is usually 30 miles under the limit," Trooper D.S. Smart said.

The cause of the wreck is still under investigation and charges could be pending, trooper said.

Oxendine's death marks the 27th death on Cleveland County roads in 2016.
